Why we Drink

Feb 22nd, 2010 | By

YouTube Preview ImageSo the official mitzvah on the holiday of Purim is for one to drink “until he can’t tell the difference between blessed is Mordechi and cursed is Haman”.  Yikes!  Is that really a behavior that we are interested in promoting?  Most of us have seen people in this state…and it’s not pretty.  I’d like to suggest that there’s no way that the sages meant we were supposed to become blithering idiots curled up on the bathroom floor having completely lost our moral compass.  If so, then what does it mean?  And how are we meant to celebrate the holiday?

I’d like to tackle this question tonight as well as; the link between manna, Purim and Yom Kippur, why we dress up and the connection between wine, evil and redemption.

Looking forward to seeing you at 7:00 @ the Aish Center.
